In India the school and college education systems the English subject is taught and tested very differently. Please understand IELTS is not like the Indian local system (school/college designed tests) of testing English at all. IELTS is a test approved by the international govt. bodies and organizations for testing the level of English competence, separately in all four language skills i.e. reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
There are many more differences and the most important three things that a student needs to understand about IELTS are –

2. Band descriptors
3. Examiner Criteria

For band score calculation, let me first help you understand how marks are given in each section.
How IELTS band score is calculated?
The IELTS band score calculation has 5 steps to it.
Step 1: Listening & Reading raw scores are given according to your number of correct answers.
Listening and Reading have 40 questions each. Each question carries 1 mark.
So raw scores for Listening & Reading are given. Let’s say 24/40 and 30/40.
Step 2: This raw score is then converted into band scores 0-9.
This conversion of the raw score (Listening Reading) into IELTS band scores 0 – 9 is done with a band score calculator.

Step 3: Band Score calculated for Speaking Section.
A certified examiner conducts a face-to-face interview with the candidate. The examiner rates the candidate’s performance on these four criteria:
1. Fluency and Coherence
2. Lexical Resource
3. Grammatical Range and Accuracy
4. Pronunciation.
Each criterion is worth 25% of the total score, and the overall band score is the average of the four
criteria scores rounded to the nearest half-band.
Step 4: Band Score calculated for Writing section.
For the Writing section, two certified examiners assess the candidate’s writing skills based on two tasks.
Task 1, which involves writing a report based on visual information.
Task 2, which involves writing an essay in response to a prompt.
The examiners evaluates the candidate’s written answers across four criteria:
1. Task Achievement
2. Coherence and Cohesion
3. Lexical Resource
4. Grammatical Range and Accuracy.
Each criterion is worth 25% of the total score and the overall band score is the average of the two task scores, rounded to the nearest half band.
Task 2 carries more weight than Task 1.
Step 5: IELTS overall band score is calculated.
The overall IELTS score is calculated by taking the average of the scores of all IELTS sections.
The overall score is reported on a scale of 0 to 9, rounded to the nearest half or whole band.
