A little bit about Bina
from IIWI Learning
My full name is Bina Kapoor and I’m born and brought up in an English speaking household in India. I studied in one of the best English schools in the upmarket South of New Delhi. And scored 75% In English and Mathematics in K10 & K12. Languages and English in particular always had my heart. I was an avid reader right from Class Six and won a few Best Reader of the Year prizes.
Looking back, I’d say a childhood steeped in 10 -14 hours of reading English literature equipped me with communication skills early on in life.
My love of reading mutated into a love of teaching and here I am with an experience of more than three decades feeling still as fresh as dew pursuing my passion. To this day, I have at least two hours of reading. Of course, now I love gorging on old literature, health, ancient body science, and grammar books (published 18th century onwards)
Here are 10 things you should know about me.
- I‘m a Masters in English.
- I’m published for more than 25 English teaching and supplementary reading books. Some of these books are fiction and some K12 text books. The first of my series of children’s fiction got released in 2012 at the World Book Fair, New Delhi.
- In December 2022, I got awarded the Shri Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan Teacher’s Excellence National Award by Minister, Uttar Pradesh Govt, Dr Baghel.
- Since 2005, I’ve been working with the National Council of Educational Research & Training, State Council of Research & Training, National Book Trust, Govt owned Central schools, various private run schools and the British Council. My work has included projects on English teaching, teacher resource development, research tool development & content generation.
- I’ve done over 40 workshops for schools across India and (including one for library members of British Council) in which over 1000 teachers and over 10,000 students.
- I’ve been teaching English for over twenty years. I’ve taught right from Primary through to higher secondary level through to IELTS for 8+. This has given me powerful and real-time insights into the language making and grammar issues that students face at each level of school and post-school education.
- I’ve taught IGCSE ‘O’ levels (Cambridge University Press & Assessment) for a year.
- I’ve worked for seven years in the corporate industry. Thusly I know what kind of communication skills are required for a corporate professional. More than 95% of students I prepared for interviews cracked interviews in BPOs and other industries.
- Since Covid, I’ve been teaching IELTS online. Students have joined me from across India and abroad. The success rate of my students cracking IELTS in first attempt has been more than 85%.
- I’ve presented a 4500 words action research paper on innovative ways of teaching-learning English for first-generation learners using social media at an International Conference organized at Delhi University College in 2018.
