Most students’ IELTS band scores are on the lower side because they fail to understand the basics of IELTS.
The first step to understanding IELTS is to understand the differences between IELTS and your school and college system of English teaching and testing.
In India the school and college education systems the English subject is taught and tested very differently. Please understand IELTS is not like the Indian local system (school/college designed tests) of testing English at all.  IELTS is a test approved by the international govt. bodies and organizations for testing the level of English competence, separately in all four language skills i.e. reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

There are many more differences and the most important three things that a student needs to understand about IELTS are –
1. Band Scores
2. Band descriptors
3. Examiner Criteria

So, lets get started without delay!

Point 1: What is the difference between the Indian English Subject Test and IELTS?

Indian System of English Testing IELTS system of English Testing
  1. Syllabus and tests are chapter based.
  2. The written test is the major test with highest marks allocation.
Reading, Listening and Speaking tests are sidelined.
  3. Questions and answers, fill ups and multiple choice are the most often used question types.
  4. Questions are mostly topic, memory and information based.Text analysis skills are sidelined.
  5. Grammar definitions and rule based questions are asked. Students prepare grammar topic wise.
  6. The system does not include evaluation criteria like originality, self expression, range of grammatical structures, range of vocabulary, coherence, cohesion, task achievement etc.
  7. Marks are given answer wise in test.
  1. Syllabus and tests are skill based. Sub-skills are tested.
  2. All four language skills – Resing Writing Speaking listening are given equal weightage.
  3. The variety of question types is very diverse. Each section has different question types.
  4. Each question tests a perticular subskill of the four langauge skills. Test analysis is tested in a major way.
  5. Applied grammar is tested. No definitions, examples and rules are asked. Students have to practice grammar accuracy while speaking & writing.
  6. Examiner criteria is directly about langauge proficiency in terms of originality, self expression, range of grammatical structures, range of vocabulary, coherence, cohesion, task achievement and more.
  7. Rating is given skill wise.

Point 2: What are IELTS band scores?
Band score is a scale measuring the level of English Proficiency. IELTS has band scores 0 – 9 (zero to nine) for measuring your English language skill.
0 (zero) – Didn’t appear in test                                  9 (nine) – Expert level of English proficiency

Point 3: How is the IELTS band score calculated?
IELTS Results Score is the overall IELTS Score. IELTS Results Score calculation is not a one-step process. It’s a 5 Steps process.  We will discuss each step and see how to use the IELTS score calculator.
Here, I am going to give you the IELTS Score calculator for-
•Listening GT band score
•GT Reading band score.
•GT IELTS band score (overall)
The link I’m going to share with you is from the official website for IELTS. And you rarely come across this link. Usually, websites have put up their own calculators, the reliability of which is questionable.

For band score calculation, let me first help you understand how marks are given in each section.

How IELTS band score is calculated?

The IELTS band score calculation has 5 steps to it.

Step 1: Listening & Reading raw scores are given according to your number of correct answers.
Listening and Reading have 40 questions each. Each question carries 1 mark.
So raw scores for Listening & Reading are given. Let’s say 24/40 and 30/40.

Step 2: This raw score is then converted into band scores 0-9.
This conversion of the raw score (Listening Reading) into IELTS  band scores 0 – 9 is done with a band score calculator.
Here is the link from the official website for IELTS with the Listening band score calculator.

You can use this link to keep a check on your band score progress in the Listening and Reading Sections.
This calculator is for both Academic and General Training IELTS. So calculate the IELTS gt reading band score and IELTS gt listening band score from the raw scores that you achieve in the IELTS Practice Tests free.

Step 3: Band Score calculated for Speaking Section.
A certified examiner conducts a face-to-face interview with the candidate. The examiner rates the candidate’s performance on these four criteria:
1.  Fluency and Coherence
2.  Lexical Resource
3. Grammatical Range and Accuracy
4. Pronunciation.
Each criterion is worth 25% of the total score, and the overall band score is the average of the four
criteria scores rounded to the nearest half-band.

Step 4: Band Score calculated for Writing section.
For the Writing section, two certified examiners assess the candidate’s writing skills based on two tasks.
Task 1, which involves writing a report based on visual information.
Task 2, which involves writing an essay in response to a prompt.

The examiners evaluates the candidate’s written answers across four criteria:
1. Task Achievement
2. Coherence and Cohesion
3.  Lexical Resource
4. Grammatical Range and Accuracy.
Each criterion is worth 25% of the total score and the overall band score is the average of the two task scores, rounded to the nearest half band.
Task 2 carries more weight than Task 1.

Step 5: IELTS overall band score is calculated.
The overall IELTS score is calculated by taking the average of the scores of all IELTS sections.
The overall score is reported on a scale of 0 to 9, rounded to the nearest half or whole band.

For Example
If you have a 7 band score in Listening, 5 in Reading, 4.5 in Speaking and 3 in Writing.
Your Overall Score comes to 4.8, which will be rounded off to 5.

Your IELTS band score result is given on a Test Report Form. A sample given below.
Look at the individual scores of Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing and the Overall Score in the below TRF infographic.

In conclusion, the GT IELTS exam pattern consists of four sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Each section has its own band score range from 0 to 9. The overall band score is the average of the four section scores, and it ranges from 0 to 9.

So now that you’ve understood band scores and band score calculations, next, you need to understand are the IELTS band descriptors especially Speaking band descriptors.
